Hanging String of Pearls Pattern

I love plants! I love how they look, I love the variety, I love the colours… I am also awful at keeping plants alive. So last year I decided to crochet a hanging plant for my conservatory. I looked online for some inspiration, and this was the result:

I was pretty happy with how it turned out and I used up some scrap yarn too.
Here is what you need:
3.5mm hook
DK yarn in colours of your choosing
Toy stuffing
Stitch marker
Darning needle
I am writing this in UK terms, and will write it up in US terms in a separate post.
Abbreviations: dc - double crochet
Ch - chain
Slst - slip stitch
Blo - back loop only
Bbl - bobble stitch - yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull through, yarn over, pull through first two loops on the hook, repeat 3 times and then yarn over and pull through all remaining loops on the hook.

Pattern: (remember this is UK terms)
Note: chain 1 at start of round does not count as a stitch throughout the pattern. Use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of each round, and move as you go.
Making the pot:
Round 1: Magic ring, ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), 8dc into the ring, slst into first stitch, pull ring closed. (8dc)
Round 2: Ch1, 2dc into each stitch around, slst into first stitch. (16dc)
Round 3: Ch1, dc, 2dc into next stitch - continue all the way round, slst into first stitch. (24dc)
Round 4: Ch1, dc in first two stitches, 2 dc into next stitch - continue all the way round, slst into first stitch. (32dc)
Round 5: Ch1, dc in first three stitches, 2dc into next stitch - continue all the way round, slst into first stitch. (40dc)
Round 6: Ch1, dc in first four stitches, 2dc into next stitch - continue all the way round, slst into first stitch. (48dc)
Round 7: Ch1, dc in first five stitches, 2dc into next stitch - continue all the way round, slst into first stitch. (56dc)
Round 8: Ch1, dc in first six stitches, 2dc into next stitch - continue all the way round, slst into first stitch. (64dc)
This makes the bottom of the plant pot and now you need to work upwards.
Round 9: Ch1, dc into blo of each stitch around, slst into the first stitch.
Round 10: Ch 1, dc into each stitch around, slst into the first stitch.
Continue repeats for Round 10 for as high as you want your pot. If you want to change colour to add a stripe (as shown in the picture), use the new colour for the slip stitch on the previous round. Once you have your desired height, do not fasten off. Sew in the end from the magic ring so your pot doesn’t unravel.
Making the soil:
(64dc) Fasten off and sew in ends.
Making the plant:
Round 1: Magic ring, ch1, 8 dc into the ring, slst into first stitch, pull ring closed. (8dc)
Round 2: Ch1, 2dc into each stitch around, slst into first stitch. (16dc)
Round 3: This round is making the strings - there will be 16 in total - the same number as stitches from the last round. You will work a length of chain into each stitch - I chained between 40 and 75 stitches. Once you have chained the length, work dc back down the chain, working a bbl at intervals of 4, 5, 6 or 7 stitches depending on how many you want on your string. Dc into the next stitch when you reach the beginning of your chain, then chain a length again and repeat as before until you reach your first stitch, slst and fasten off.
Putting together:
Sew the circle bottom of the plant to the centre of the soil circle.
Insert your hook back into the loop left on the pot. You will now attach the soil to the pot by working a round the same as Round 10 of the pot, but also catching the back loop of the soil. Halfway round, stuff your pot with toy stuffing to give shape. You can keep stuffing as you go. Then work another round of dc which will give your pot a rim, then fasten off and sew in ends.
To make the hanging loops - attach your yarn to any dc, chain 50 (or more if you would like longer hanging loops) and then attach to the pot opposite. Attach your yarn halfway between he two ends of your first hanging loops, chain 50 (or the same amount as your other loop) and then attach to the pot opposite. Sew in your ends.
I hope you enjoy this pattern! I would love to see your hanging plants, please feel free to tag me on Facebook, Instagram or TikTok.
